ART OUT HERE was an ambitious annual tour of California's Sonoma County. It celebrated the ground-breaking, experimental work created by artists in the area. Tour participants were taken to various local sites where artists will create ephemeral, site-specific works, such as installations, performances, event radio station programs, and parades. Inspired by other tour- based, artist-run initiatives such as High Desert Test Sites and Center for Land Use Interpretation, and Ted Purves’ “New Rules For Public Art,” Art Out Here aimed to (1) revolutionize the creative identity of our area, shifting away from the decorative “wine country” aesthetic that is defined by the tourist industry to a locally-defined focus on the innovative creative culture of our area (2) redefine notions of public art as permanent sculpture, and (3) challenge and contribute to the larger conversation about innovative art being created outside of big cities.!
